Early Life & Education
Born on August 22, 1946, Justice Sirpurkar hails from a family deeply rooted in the legal profession. He matriculated from the Chandrapur District of Maharashtra, topping in the district. He completed his graduation from Morris College, Nagpur, in 1966, followed by his Law Degree from the University College of Law, Nagpur.
Career at the Bar
He practiced at the High Court in Nagpur on the Constitutional and Criminal sides. His leadership was evident early on, being elected as Joint Secretary and Secretary of the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur. He was also elected as a Member of the Maharashtra Bar Council twice, in 1985 and 1991.
Journey on the High Court Bench
Elevated as a Judge of the Bombay High Court in 1992, he also served as the Visiting Judge in charge of the Judicial Officers Training Institute in Nagpur. In December 1997, he was transferred to the Madras High Court, where he served as the “Executive Chairman” of the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority and was instrumental in starting the Judicial Academy at Madras.
Leadership as Chief Justice
Justice Sirpurkar was elevated as Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttaranchal on July 25, 2004, where he founded the Judicial Academy called “Ujala”. He then assumed office as the Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta on March 20, 2005, where he also established a Judicial Academy.
