Judicial Leadership

Served as Chief Justice of two High Courts (Gauhati and Andhra Pradesh) and as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, demonstrating profound administrative and judicial leadership.

Held pivotal roles including Additional Solicitor General of India, Central Government Standing Counsel, and Senior Advocate before elevation to the Bench.

The Professional Journey

  • Schooling: Studied in Modern School, New Delhi until 1968.
  • ISCE: Passed the ISCE examination in 1970-71 from St. Joseph’s Collegiate, Allahabad.
  • Graduation: Graduated in History (Hons.) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University in 1974.
  • Law Degree: Obtained LL.B. degree from the Faculty of Law, Delhi University in 1977.
  • Enrolment: Enrolled as an Advocate on 28th July, 1977.
  • Practice: Practiced in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court.
  • Advocate-on-Record: Qualified the examination and enrolled as an Advocate-on-Record in the Supreme Court in 1981.
  • Editor, ILR (Delhi Series): Appointed as the Editor in February 1983 and continued in the role until his elevation to the Delhi High Court.
  • Central Government Standing Counsel: Served from December 1990 to December 1996, handling all kinds of cases on behalf of the Central Government, including criminal trials for economic offences.
  • Senior Advocate: Designated as a Senior Advocate in February 1997.
  • Additional Solicitor General of India: Appointed on 14th July 1998 and served until his appointment as a Judge.
  • Delhi High Court:
    • Appointed as an Additional Judge on 19th February, 1999.
    • Appointed as a Permanent Judge on 5th July, 1999.
    • Functioned as the Acting Chief Justice from 13th February, 2010 to 21st May, 2010.
  • Gauhati High Court: Functioned as Chief Justice from 24th June, 2010 to 14th November, 2011.
  • High Court of Andhra Pradesh: Functioned as Chief Justice from 15th November, 2011 to 3rd June, 2012.
  • Appointment: Appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 4th June, 2012.
  • Retirement: Retired on 30th December, 2018 (F/N), as the senior-most judge.
